We Love Music.
That probably isn't too surprising, everyone loves music! People may disagree about what they prefer, focused more on the style... but music itself will tend to be something we all enjoy. Scroll down for some actual samples that some of the folks who play in our bands have recorded.
From the improvisation of jazz, to the quirky, witty heart of folk, to the drums and guitars of rock and metal... from the complexity of classical and the purity of a great orchestral performance, to a gritty blues song featuring tasty guitar and a gravelly vocal... music is just wonderful.
We believe that God loves music too. It was His idea after all and it's no accident that the Psalms make up the longest book in the bible.
When we get together, we celebrate that love by singing. It celebrates good things in life and love and brings us all onto the same page in one voice. So when you come, sing loud, have fun and share that sense of joy with us!
You'll also probably hear us do a song you may have heard on the radio, or a classic rock favorite you grew up with as a kid. That might seem unusual in a church setting, but here's why we do that:
- Many of the folks who visit us didn't grow up in church, so it's something familiar
- The message of the song, ties into the big idea of the service in some way, it may ask the question that the message answers
- It creates a memorable tie to the message and service, so when you hear the song elsewhere, that ties into a good memory
- It is ridiculously fun
- It can be surprising, people may not be expecting a church to spin up some classic rock in the middle of the service
- It's a way that we can connect and use our culture as an opportunity to communicate
- We think that God loves good music, just like we do
Some of the folks around The Surge are songwriters and recording artists, here are a couple of samples!
