Welcome to the Surge Residency program!
WHAT TYPES OF RESIDENCY PROGRAMS ARE AVAILABLE?
We essentially have two roles in our Residency Program: Full Time Church Planting Resident (on a track to plant a new church) and a Part Time Intern position. The Church Planter Residency will be a salaried staff position. The Internship is an unpaid position, but with practical assistance based on circumstance and need.
WHAT IS THE PRIMARY GOAL OF THE SURGE RESIDENCY PROGRAM?
The Surge Residency is a training and experiential proving ground for the next generation church leaders. During your time with us, you will accumulate valuable experience, mentors, and knowledge that will prepare you for stepping into the next phase of your God-given calling. Our desire is that this chapter will give you the experience you need to find a full-time staff position in a local church, para-church ministry, or unique position that God may call you to.
WHAT QUALIFICATIONS ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?
We are looking for people who have a clear sense of calling and who dare to dream big dreams for God’s work in this generation. We are also big believers in spiritual discipline, entrepreneurial self-starters, flexibility, sense of humor, community and collaboration, so we weigh those factors heavily in consideration.
WHEN ARE THE DATES FOR THE PROGRAM?
Our Residency Program runs in the Summer, Spring and Fall, following school schedules with flexibility for educational and other commitments. Church Planting Residency will normally be on a 2-3 year track, depending on the candidate.
IS THIS JUST AN INTERNSHIP?
No. Our intention is for much more. It's hands-on ministry, where you'll be treated as a staff member and held to the expectations of staff members. You won't be treated like an "intern." You'll be viewed as a vital part of our staff team.
DOES THE SURGE PROVIDE HOUSING FOR RESIDENTS?
We do have some housing opportunities available with some of our church families. Otherwise, our staff will be available to give guidance on areas of the city that might provide affordable housing.
CAN I GET COLLEGE CREDIT?
Currently, our program is not designed to be a seminary or college experience; therefore, we are not currently offering any college or seminary credit. However, if you believe your current college or seminary would be willing to offer independent study or internship credit for your involvement, then we are willing to work with you and your academic institution to provide them with the necessary documentation.
WHAT IS THE COST TO COMPLETE THE PROGRAM?
There is no cost to attend the Residency, but you will need the finances to support you and your family for your time in the Washington, DC area. You may accomplish this through fundraising, working a part-time job, or some combination of the two. If you are single, you should expect to need approximately $1500/month to cover rent, food, and other necessities to live in Washington DC. The Surge will cover all of your materials for the program.
CAN I SEEK PART-TIME EMPLOYMENT?
Yes, we encourage it. It’s an opportunity to get outside the walls of the church organization and be missional in the context of our culture. The program is typically a part-time commitment which requires 20+ hours a week. We’ll work with you to set realistic goals coordinating with your work schedules.
